"To have great poets, there must be great audiences."
  Walt Whitman

Yes, Walt, so true! We ( my BC students and I) thank the readers of these poems for giving us an audience.

The first poem for today reminds me of the spirit of "I Hear America Singing." Thank-you, Jordan, for this upbeat message.

“All the Little Things"

Sing while you clean -
Only the mop will hear.

Dance in the kitchen
When no people are near.

Roll in the snow
And taste its cool delight.

Defeat all your neighbors
In a big snowball fight.

Always lick the batter
Of the sweets that you bake.

And then while you're at it,
Swipe some icing off the cake.

When you hear the ice cream truck,
Chase it way down the street

Without stopping to care
There's no shoes on your feet.

Jump from a rock
 And reach for the sky.

Your feet may not soar

But your soul sure will fly.

When you look back at life

You won't remember each day,
But it's these little memories

That won't fade away.

True content will not come

From the gadgets with which you play;

If you're happy, it's these moments

That made you this way

I mentioned on the last post that Walt Whitman had a great sense of patriotism. I post the next poems due to its timeliness in our country.

Readers, please remember to respect and remember that as a prompt for the poems, I asked the students to reflect on things that were troubling them----situations that need to be changed. Matt offers his thoughts in "Labels."

Labels

A label is just a thing
Found on cans of soup or new products.
These “labels” are also given to human beings.
A person is more than just a box to check that says
White, Black, Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern,
Mexican, or whatever it may be.
Who would you be if there was no box to check?
What would the world be?
It would be one joined together in a happiness.
When you were born you never
said,“Hi everyone I'm white.”
You were taught to call yourself that
And everyone else was taught to call you that.
This is a problem that starts conflicts.
If you think about it, every war is started
by some sort of label.
We need to work together
To tear off these labels.
The solution is so simple.
Rip the labels off.
