This is NOT just another blog about a library!!!!

...because this was not just any library----it was the PHILADELPHIA FREE LIBRARY!
It may be in Philly, but it has a strong BC connection

Let me explain...last year Berks Catholic was looking for a way to make great research sources available to our students in a cost-effective way. Mr. Olivard was able to form a wonderful partnership with The Philadelphia Free Library so that BC students have access to all the great data bases available here. All of us have library cards (Freshmen, you will soon) so we are officially part of the Free Library family!

This beautiful building was built in Logan Square in 1925 (although its origins were in the late 1880s in a single room in City Hall). William Pepper, a University of Penn graduate, wanted to offer a truly free lending experience. (Sorry to debunk the Benjamin Franklin theory--I found out his library was based on a paid subscription!)

As the world progressed, so did the library. Fast forward to 2017, and besides the variety of books (hard copy and digital) available, there  is so much more. When I was there folks were getting blood pressure readings. People were checking out sheet music, reviewing the print and picture collections, and even putting themselves on waiting lists to CHECK OUT MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS for 3 weeks! The Business, Science and Industry Department is open to individuals who want to start their own businesses. There are rooms for seniors, teens, and toddlers.

BC students, I know what you're thinking: "This is nice, but I don't live in Philly." True (but if you are there for a visit, or if you see yourself as a college student there some day, you can proudly stop in as a member!) Meanwhile, for all of you back home, remember you have digital access to all the data bases.

To any non-BC students, you too can have a Philadelphia Free Library card. It's a whole new world of resource and reading.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT:
Reflecting on my last blog entry about careers... and as I was touring the library today I thought...students, it's not about us wanting you to be able to write a great research paper. It's about helping you get ready for the world. It's about finding great ways to help you read about your future as a graphic designer, a business owner, an electrician, a psychologist, a musician, or a chef.
It's about being resourceful (as Mrs. Urban likes to say) and knowing how to access material. There are so many people who want to help you along the way. We're all in this together...(cue Lion King music--"The Circle of Life.") Find your card and explore!
